The past few weeks in the AI universe has been particularly interesting, highlighted last week by Sam Altman’s “Code Red” alarm at OpenAI. While his public rationale frames this urgent pivot as a renewed focus on creating a better, enhanced user experience — especially in the face of recent improvements of competitor AI products, especially Google’s — a deeper analysis suggests the true reason may be more existential for the major AI labs.

The general AI bottleneck

The unspoken reason for this sense of urgency is a growing realization: While competitor models are rapidly closing the gap with ChatGPT in utility and quality, none are demonstrably closer to achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Current Generative AI models excel at interpolation (which can be described as rearranging and synthesizing existing data), but they appear to be hitting a fundamental ceiling.

Generative AI, in its current form, cannot and will not be able to produce truly great, original content, nor can it replace the more complex, nuanced, and abstract work that defines human creativity.

The technological leap required

If reaching AGI or using AI to create truly original content is the goal, the solution is self-evident: The underlying technology must achieve a massive conceptual jump to the next level.

However, this is where the dilemma lies. The current paradigm is defined by our approach to training Large Language Models (LLMs):

  1. Massive scale: Feeding models enormous quantities of data (scaling up the ‘D’ in data).
  2. Increased parameters: Creating models with billions or trillions of connections (scaling up the ‘M’ in model size).
  3. Reinforcement learning (RLHF): Fine-tuning the models using human feedback.

The concern is that this iterative scaling strategy — doing more of the same — is reaching diminishing returns. It produces faster, more coherent mimics, but doesn’t install the core cognitive mechanisms required for real-world reasoning, abstract problem-solving, or genuine originality. The AI simply isn’t capable of thinking for itself, it merely mimics what it’s learned elsewhere.

The bursting bubble scenario

This leads to an interesting question: Will the AI bubble burst when the wider audience realizes the fundamental limitations of current Generative AI and reaching the next level (AGI) isn’t (currently) possible?

The current narrative has been driven by the promise of AGI and wholesale creative replacement. If this promise fails to materialize, and the technology merely settles into a role as a sophisticated tool for drafting, summarization, and coding assistance (utility, not replacement), investor and public enthusiasm could wane dramatically — and valuations of companies touting it dramatically fall. Hence the need for “Code Red.”

A “Code Red” may be less about competition and more about the internal pressure to demonstrate a path to AGI before the market decides the current technology has peaked.
